Virginia - Robert Hurt

Robert Hurt
House Candidate
Virginia 5th District

At age 41, Robert Hurt has managed to build a solid record as a conservative Republican in Virginia. He is serving his first term as State Senator and prior to that served six years as a Delegate in the Virginia House of Delegates. He has received excellent marks from the Chamber of Commerce and the Federation of Independent Businesses.

He has also done non-political work, serving as Chief Assistant Commonwealth Attorney for Pittsylvania County as well as working as an attorney in private practice while in the State Assembly. Mr. Hurt received his bachelors from Hampden Sydney College and his law degree from Mississippi College of Law.

Why he wins our Endorsement

Mr. Hurt has a conservative record in state government and has shown an excellent ability to communicate with voters and raise money without relying on special interest contributions or personal wealth. He is a champion of limited government and free markets. He supports passage of a balanced budget amendment, line item veto power, and supports ending government intervention in private enterprise. He understands that the private sector creates jobs, and in order for the private sector to succeed, the federal government must try to make it more competitive, not less competitive. Robert Hurt is closely in line with the beliefs of the 5th District and the principles of Restore America’s Legacy.

Election Battle

The 5th District is considered republican territory, but in 2008 Tom Perriello (D) defeated long time Rep. Virgil Goode (R) by a little over 700 votes. McCain won the district by three points, which gives a strong indication that Perriello may have just been lucky. Perriello voted for the Stimulus and Healthcare Reform, neither of which are popular in the district. Mr. Hurt has done a solid job fundraising, and in fact defeated three primary opponents that largely self-funded their campaigns. However, Perriello has been raising and saving money expecting a major battle to keep his seat. He has over ten times as much as Mr. Hurt in his account. Mr. Hurt will need to work hard to gain the resources and begin to reach out to republicans that did not support him in the highly competitive primary.
