Harris is the son of immigrants from Eastern Europe that fled Communism after World War 2. He works as an obstetric anesthesiologist at John Hopkins Hospital and a state senator in the Maryland General Assembly. Harris took the Taxpayer Protection pledge prior to coming into public office and has held true to that pledge.
Harris also served 17 years in the Navy Reserve including being on active duty during Desert Storm. He currently holds the rank of Commander. In 2008, he challenged Republican incumbent Wayne Gilchrist, defeating him in the primary but ultimately losing to Rep. Kratovil in the general election.
Harris received his bachelor’s and medical degree from John Hopkins University.
Why he wins our Endorsement
Harris has been a voice for taxpayers and small businesses since joining the Maryland General Assembly. He won the John Shaw Award from the Maryland Businesses for Responsive Government group – who gave him a perfect 100% rating. Harris’s background in medicine and military service is also unique and gives him a particular expertise when it comes to discussing healthcare or defense policy. He is a well-rounded candidate that has shown he is willing to challenge the establishment.
Election Battle
Harris narrowly lost to Rep. Frank Kratovil in 2008 because his primary opponent, Wayne Gilchrist actively undermined him after losing to Harris. Gilchrist was the incumbent Congressman and did not take well to being challenged from within his own party. Gilchrist went as far as to endorse democrat Kratovil. Harris has worked hard to re-unify the Republican Party in the 1st district around him and move passed the messy internal battle with Gilchrist. The 1st District is very Republican and supported McCain with 58% of the vote. The conservative district is not likely to elect Kratovil a second time, especially with the anti-incumbent sentiment. If Harris can heal his wounds from 2008, he should win. Rep. Kratovil won’t go down easy and has raised a considerable amount of money to help protect himself.
