Stephen Fincher

Stephen Fincher is a managing partner of Fincher Farms and member of a famous gospel singing group, “The Fincher Family”.  His farming group grows soybeans, cotton, corn, and wheat.  Fincher has been active in his community, serving as President of the Dixie Youth Baseball league and President of United Methodist men.  Fincher is also on the younger side, in terms of Congressional candidates, at age 37.

Why he wins our Endorsement
It is easy for some to dismiss Fincher as a typical Christian conservative that is overly-focused on social issues and over his head when it comes to economic and foreign policy.  That is simply not the case.  In the issues section of his website, the top issues are “constitutional governance”, “restoring prosperity and creating jobs”, and “protecting our healthcare from government takeover”.  Fincher is a conservative on social issues but his proposals span all policy areas, including labor law and the environment.  Fincher has also shown a tremendous ability to connect with voters and turn his fame as a singer into strong grassroots support.  Fincher is a quality candidate that the Democrats would be foolish to dismiss because of his gospel singing background and lack of political experience.

Election Battle
The 8^th District is fairly rural, low income, and conservative.  McCain won the district with 56% of the vote.  The district is represented by Rep. John Tanner, a Blue Dog Democrat that has decided to retire after this term.  The opening has given Republicans a golden opportunity to take another conservative seat away from the Democrats.  State senator Roy Herron is running for the democrats and has done a sufficient job raising money but faces a political climate that is strongly against the Democrats and a constituency that is very conservative.  Fincher has ran a very impressive campaign, winning a competitive primary and raising an incredible amount of money for the race.  Most label the race as toss up or leans republican because of the threat of independent candidate Donn James splitting the conservative vote.  But most think the smart money is on Fincher to pull out the win.
