Prior to being elected in the 2010 Republican wave election, Scott DesJarlais was a practicing physician for over two decades. President Obama's horrendous health care reform law motivated him to get involved in politics and run for federal office. DesJarlais serves on the Agriculture Committee, Commitee on Education & Workforce, and the Commitee on Oversight & Government Reform.

Scott earned is bachelor's degree in Chemistry and Psychology from the University of South Dakota, as well as his Doctor of Medicine.

Why he wins our endorsement:
Scott DesJarlais has had a solid voting record in his first term in Congress when it comes to fiscal responsibility. He supported the Ryan Budget and the Cut, Cap, Balance law. He has consistently opposed new spending. He has voted in favor of new free trade agreements and the reining in of federal regulations on industry. He voted against the disappointing debt ceiling deal as well. As a freshman he has had very limited opportunities to propose his own legislation and get it passed. Having said that, his lack of work on sponsoring or cosponsoring bills is disappointing. Other than that, DesJarlais is a solid Congressman.

Election Battle
DesJarlais won easily with 57 percent of the vote in 2010 against incumbent Lincoln Davis. However, his district has been redrawn to include a large number of new constituents. Thus far no serious contender has emerged among Democrats or within the Republican Party.
